Is Star Trek: Discovery Really Worth Paying For? Star Trek: Discovery, the much- ballyhooed, long- awaited return of Star Trek to TV, began Sunday night with a two- part episode in which the titular ship, the U. S. S. Discovery (NCC- 1. The network hopes that those two hours—a premiere on CBS’s regular cable network, and a follow- up episode on its online- streaming platform, CBS All Access—will inspire hungry fans to sign up for yet another streaming service, since that’s the only place they’ll be able to find subsequent episodes of Discovery. And indeed, there was plenty of buzz around Sunday’s premiere—but it’s unclear whether it will be enough to convince legions of Trekkies and newcomers that the show is worth adding another online subscription to the average American’s growing list. Like many high- profile shows these days, Star Trek: Discovery came packaged with a Talking Dead- esque after- show chat series moderated by Matt Mira,Chris Hardwick’s fellow Nerdist podcast host. During the first episode of After Trek, Mira proposed that the first two hours of Season 1 serve as something of a cold open for the rest of Discovery, and show- runner Aaron Harberts agreed.

Without going into specifics—though we will later—Harberts explained that the events of the first two installments are the kind of backstory we might usually see via flashback as we follow the show’s main character, First Officer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin- Green), on an episode- length adventure. The two episodes were also neatly split by a classic cliff- hanger that saw our heroes facing insurmountable danger—and audiences were forced to sign up for a CBS All Access membership in order to see how Burnham and the rest would get out of it.

Evidently, that gambit was a success; just a few hours after the East Coast premiere, CBS sent out a self- congratulatory e- mail boasting, “Star Trek: Discovery Beams CBS All Access to its Highest Sign- up Day Ever.” Though the network declined to provide hard numbers, it is evidently pleased with the amount of Trekkies and other Discovery fans who have already handed over $6 a month (or $1. If those viewers are interested only in watching Discovery—and plan to cancel their memberships when the show is not airing—they will likely end up paying $3.

Tunes for a pass to the current season of The Big Bang Theory.)That’s not necessarily an unreasonable investment for Star Trek fans, especially given the high- production values on Discovery. But for fans not used to paying for Star Trek, which has previously always been readily available, or for those unwilling to pay extra for CBS content (though they might be more willing to pony up if it were branded “Showtime” instead), CBS All Access has an uphill battle to fight. So, what does the show do to earn its price tag? Well, for one, Martin- Green makes for quite the compelling hero.

Sci- fi fans pining for Battlestar Galactica’s Starbuck will surely thrill to see the Vulcan- raised human First Officer holler with joy, rather than fear, as she floats her way into the middle of uncharted space. The Klingons have also had a dramatic makeover not only in their dress and makeup, but in their perspective. Usually the violent “other” in Star Trek lore, Discovery gives the familiar antagonists their own point of view, backstory, culture, and reasons to fight. James Frain’s take on the classic and beloved Trek character Sarek (he’s both Spock’s dad and Burnham’s foster father) provides some nice connective tissue to the legacy of the series.

Meanwhile, Doug Jones (a rubbery- limbed actor best known for embodying some of Guillermo del Toro’s lanky cinematic creatures, like Hellboy’s Abe Sapien and the Pale Man from Pan’s Labyrinth) takes a fussy stab at a new species: a Kelpien chief science officer named Saru. The locations may be more dazzling—the first episode opens with a desert scene that looks like it was plucked right out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens—but the spirit is undeniably Trek, not Wars.

Burnham’s curious awe at the wonders of space, the struggle between her Vulcan upbringing and her human side, a clear respect for both science and adventure, and the impetuous lengths she goes to in order to protect the ones she loves are all very much in keeping with what we know and love about Trek. But will that spirit continue past the premiere? Here’s where we get into specific spoilers for the first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery. Enter at your own risk. It’s silly to talk about the Star Trek premiere without mentioning Michelle Yeoh’s firm, kind, wise take on Burnham’s mentor and captain: Philippa Georgiou. Only the second female Starfleet captain at the center of a Star Trek series, Georgiou is dead before the second episode wraps up. It’s a move that many anticipated—with Jason Isaacs also on board as Captain Gabriel Lorca of the titular U.

S. S. Discovery, there were far too many cooks in this particular galactic kitchen. The creators tipped their hand a bit as well when, before the premiere even aired, they gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly promising that, in this post- Game of Thrones world, “major characters won’t be safe.” This particular move, at least, doesn’t feel much in keeping with previous Star Trek iterations, which only boast a few major character deaths that stuck—and the most famous, Tasha Yar of Star Trek: The Next Generation, came at the request of actress Denise Crosby, who was “miserable” on the show. So already we have a Star Trek that is already a bit more invested in blending in with Peak- TV trends than in staying grounded in what made the franchise popular to begin with. And those who tuned in to see something that is still somewhat rare outside of Orange Is the New Black—two women of color sharing the majority of the show’s scenes together—also had the intergalactic rug pulled out from under them when Yeoh bit the dust. There’s no predicting what Isaacs will be like on the show—though the actor has never given any audience reason to doubt him—because Captain Lorca doesn’t even appear in the first two hours. Discovery may also endure a shifting tone thanks to its behind- the- scenes shuffle—show- runner Bryan Fuller was pushed out of the series, while two writers and longtime collaborators, Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg were promoted in his place.

Before he left, Fuller created the initial bones of the series, which are still reportedly in place; he also wrote the first two episodes. Watch Enter The Warriors Gate Online here. Harberts and Berg are respectfully staying quiet on precisely how much of Fuller’s initial concept and scripts remained after he left. But what’s unavoidably true is that the longer Star Trek: Discovery goes on, the further it will move away from that original plan. Fuller’s involvement was a big draw for Star Trek fans who know very well that the Pushing Daisies,Hannibal, and American Gods show- runner got his start writing for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager. The series, they felt confident, was in the reliable hands of someone with deep Trek history. But it’s hard to know what the show will look like as it boldly goes beyond those initial two scripts. The trailer for the upcoming season, at least, is intriguing, with Burnham on her way to prison for her mutinous actions and the rest of the surviving crew members of the U.

S. S. Shenzhou scattered to the wind. But will it be compelling enough to break through the crowded Peak- TV landscape, with the added obstacle of that pesky All Access paywall? We’ll have no way of knowing for sure, since CBS, taking a cue from Netflix, doesn’t release ratings data from All Access. But fans will likely be able to tell from chatter alone if this particular series seems destined to live long and prosper. Get Vanity Fair’s HWD Newsletter.
